Roofing Contractor, Johnstown, Pa - Signature Construction explains the difference in roofing materials
Signature Construction, Roofing Contractor, Johnstown, pa, explains the difference in roofing materials and how to be sure your are getting quality roofing products

Roofing products are similar to any other product sold to consumers, they vary in style, color, quality, durability, warranty, price, appearance and longevity.

Signature Construction, Cambrian County's only "Master Shingle Crew" certified roofing company, and are dedicated to informing and educating the local community about the roofing industry. For more information about other roofing topics we have published articles about, please visit our website.

When you decide to hire a roofing company to install a new roof on your home or business, be sure you are getting a quality product for your money. As stated, products differ from the underpayment, Winterguard, shingle, ridge vent and sealants.

Underlayment: Underlayment is the felt paper that is applied to the roof deck prior to shingle installation. This product places a barrier between your wood decking and the underside of the shingle. Cheap underlayments, such as # 15 or #30 pound felt paper is subject to wrinkling, causing the shingles to not lay flat on your roof. It also lacks in its moisture resistance and wind resistance. A high quality Underlayment is a synthetic base, fully water and high wind resistant. The synthetic Underlayment does not wrinkle and provides a smooth, durable base for your new roof.

Winterguard: Winterguard or ice shield Underlayment is REQUIRED by mostly all shingle manufacturers to activate your roof warranty. Winterguard is available in high quality, mid-quality, and cheap. The purpose of Winterguard is to help protect your home during ice dams that DO appear during our winter months. Ice dams will cause severe damage to your roof, your interior walls and ceilings, insulation, etc. Be sure your roofing contractor is not only using a Winterguard Underlayment in all roof valleys and at all eaves, but that they are using a quality Winterguard that carries it's own, independent warranty.

Shingles: Shingles will provide the finish look to your homes roof. Be sure you choose the color and style that best suits your personal taste. Shingles come in every color, mixed colors, dimensional styles, slate style, wood shake style, and every combination of each of the foregoing imaginable. However, shingle manufacturers do differ in quality. Make sure your roofing contractor is not using defective shingles from a wholesale supply company. These shingles carry no warranty. Also, if you are paying good money , you should be getting, at least, a GOOD roof. Signature Construction uses only the highest quality manufacturers, Certainteed, a leader in shingle design and quality. All of our installers are trained and tested by Certainteed to be individually certified shingle installers, and we are a master shingle crew. Certainteed, and companies similar such as Owens Corning, stand behind their products, and have designated representatives to respond to any calls, questions, concerns or issues concerning a product from the company they represent. If you choose, or allow your roofer to choose a no-name manufacturer or a defective product, in the end, they are the only ones really saving money. A cheap roof up front will turn into a very expensive roof later on.

Ridge vent: Ventilation is a common problem. The problem is the lack of it!! Ventilation is required for your manufacturers warranty to be in full effect. No ventilation will destroy your roof, and the plywood, or wood planking that acts as your roof deck. No ventilation can cause health problems as well. Signature Construction offers free dvd's that fully explain the importance of adequate roof ventilation. Do not allow your roofer to install a ridge vent that lacks external baffles. These defective , cheap products look usually like a roll of steel wool, or foam mesh that your roofer is going to tell you is Ridgevent. If you install this style of vent , it can and will defect your warranty, and it can and will cause one or more of the following- 1. premature shingle deterioration, 2. drying out, cracking of shingles, 3. Mold/mildew on the underside of your wood roof decking, 4. An increase in your energy costs for cooling. Be sure to verify you are getting a quality, fully functioning vent.
